TCF

TEST DE CONNAISSANCE DU FRANÇAIS (TCF)

TCF has been devised by France Éducation international : it aims at assessing the proficiency in French at any one time of any non-French-speaking candidate who needs to know and certify her/his command of French for academic, personal or occupational motives. The test-results will be mapped to one of the 6 levels of proficiency – A1 to C2 – defined in the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The results to the TCF are valid for 2 years.

PLEASE NOTE all our examination sessions are paper-based.

Intégration, Résidence et Nationalité

Who for ?

The TCF Intégration, Résidence et Nationalité (IRN) is dedicated to any non-French speaking person over 16 years of age, willing to validate her/his proficiency in French in order to :

  • Request the French Nationality ( B1 level )
  • Request a long-duration Resident Card ( A2 level )
  • Validate her/his command of French as part of the OFII citizen-process – OFII : Office Français de l’Immigration et de l’Intégration – ( A1 level )

Please note Langue et Communication cannot be held responsible for failing to validate the required level.

Cases of exemption :

Exemptions can be granted by the Préfecture to :

– Holders of an official diploma. The lowest level required is Level 3, defined by the Nomenclature Nationale des Niveaux de Formation, (i.e. Brevet des Collèges, BEP, CAP. However, it is highly recommended ensuring your diploma will be accepted by the prefectural authorities,

– Holders of a diploma in French as a Foreign Language of at least a A2 for a request of Resident Card and at least a B1 level for a request of French Nationality,

– People over 65 for the Resident Card,

– Handicapped or chronically impaired people – a medical certificate will be required -,

If you think you could benefit from an exemption, please note it is best to contact the Prefecture. Granting exemptions comes under the jurisdiction of prefectural authorities exclusively.

What ?

The TCF includes FOUR compulsory sections assessing skills in standard French :

Listening Comprehension – 15 minutes – 20 multiple-choice questions ( FOUR  possible answers to choose from, ONE anwer only is correct )

Reading Comprehension – 20 minutes – 20 multiple-choice questions ( FOUR possible answers to choose from, ONE anwer only is correct )

Written expression – 30 minutes – 3 exercices

Spoken expression – 10 minutes – 3 exercices ( individualized in one-to-one configuration with an examiner )

Every candidate to the TCF, will be photographed by a supervisor during the course of the TCF examination session (s)he will attend.

Tout Public

Who for ?

The TCF Tout Public (TP) is dedicated to any non-French-speaking candidate of at least 16 years of age, willing to get her/his command of French assessed for academic reasons (students, interns, …), occupational reasons (employees, potential employees, job-seekers, …), or personal motives

When coupled with a compulsory written expression paper,  the TCP PT is the official test recognized by the Ministère de l’Enseignement Supérieur et le Ministère de la Culture, as part of the DAP process – Demande d’Admission Préalable (DAP)

The TCF TP is administered by the Ministère de l’Éducation Nationale, de la Jeunesse et des Sports. In this respect, it is recognised by :

  • the Ministère de l’Enseignement Supérieur, de la Recherche et de l’Innovation,
  • the Direction de l’Intégration et de l’Accès à la Nationalité under the aegis of the Ministère de l’Intérieur,
  • the Ministère de la Culture,
  • the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration du Québec (MIFI)
  • the training centres,
  • the occupational world.

What?

The test includes THREE compulsory sections :

Listening Comprehension – 25 minutes – 29 multiple-choice questions ( FOUR  possible answers to choose from, ONE anwer only is correct )

General Linguistic Competence – 15 minutes – 18 multiple-choice questions ( FOUR possible answers to choose from, ONE anwer only is correct )

Written Comprehension – 45 minutes – 29 multiple-choice questions ( FOUR possible answers to choose from, ONE anwer only is correct )

And TWO complementary sections :

Written expression – 60 minutes – 3 exercices

Spoken Expression – 12 minutes including 2 preparatory minutes – 3 exercices ( individualized in one-to-one configuration with an examiner )
